So you’re going to repair some electrical connections on your ride and without a doubt you want to do it right. Where do you start?
First; quality terminals meant for your application that work with the size wire that is being used.
I prefer what is called open barrel type terminals, which you can cover with heat shrink. Now keep in mind there isn’t anything wrong with insulated terminals. The key is to select the proper terminal and correct size, for the wire. Most automotive wire is 20-18 or 16-14 AWG (American Wire Gauge), newer vehicles are using smaller wire 22-24 and smaller. The size is usually marked on the wire.
Second; the proper tools, will help you make a professional connection a good wire stripper and crimper. With some terminals you will need a tool designed for that style terminal.
Now you’re thinking why do I want to go through all that trouble so I’ll just solder it. Whoa! Cowboy, if this connection is close to heat and vibration occurs, put that blowtorch down. Be mindful of where the terminal is you don’t want the solder to melt. With vibration it could be brittle and break. Just take your time analyze, the project. Get the parts together make a plan and you will have a professional crimp that won’t leave you on the side of the road.
